Two things decide when to visit Chengdu, and only one of them is the weather.

The weather question is simpler than it looks: Chengdu sits in a basin, it is overcast for much of the year, and the sun is not what you came for. The holiday calendar is the real variable, because two periods a year turn every attraction in China into a queue and every train into a scramble.

The short answer

Best overall
March – June
Also good
September – November
Workable
December – February, if you dislike crowds more than damp

The two weeks to plan around

These are not weather events. They are the two largest human migrations on earth, and they close nothing but fill everything.

Chinese national holidays that affect travel
Holiday 2027 date What it means for a visitor
Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) New Year’s Day falls on Saturday 6 February 2027 Trains and flights book out weeks ahead; many small businesses close; attractions that stay open are extremely busy
National Day Golden Week 1 – 7 October Domestic tourism peaks nationwide; scenic areas hit capacity caps and sell out

Checked 13 Aug 2026 Chinese New Year’s Day 2027 and the 1–7 October National Day period per published Chinese holiday calendars. The exact official rest days and make-up working days around Spring Festival 2027 are set by a State Council announcement expected in late 2026 — treat the surrounding fortnight as affected until it is published.

If your dates are fixed inside a Golden Week

Book every train and every timed-entry ticket the moment the booking window opens, and expect the panda base morning slot to be gone within hours. The 14-day reservation window becomes a race rather than a formality.

Month by month

March to June — the best stretch

Warming, green, and before the heaviest summer rain. Late March through May is when Sichuan looks the way the photographs suggest, and when a day trip to Leshan or Qingcheng is most likely to stay dry. Note the short public holidays in early April and early May, which fill domestic destinations for a long weekend without the intensity of a Golden Week.

July and August — hot, wet, and the one real weather risk

This is the wet season, and it is the only time of year when weather can genuinely spoil a plan. Heavy rain closes the Leshan cliff staircase at short notice; mountain roads and hiking routes in the wider province are more prone to disruption. It is also school-holiday season domestically.

If you travel now, build in a spare day and treat the Leshan river cruise as your rain plan.

September to November — the second-best window

September and late October into November are excellent. The single caveat is the first week of October, which is Golden Week and should be avoided outright if you have any choice.

December to February — grey, quiet, cheap

Cold rather than freezing, damp, and reliably overcast. Attractions run winter hours: the panda base shifts to 08:00–12:00 and 12:00–16:30, and Leshan to 08:00–17:30 from 8 October. Crowds are thin outside Spring Festival, and this is when the teahouses make most sense — they are, after all, a cold-weather institution.

About the grey sky

Chengdu’s basin geography traps cloud, and the city is genuinely overcast much of the year. Visitors who arrive expecting blue skies over the pandas are often disappointed; visitors who arrive expecting soft flat light and cool damp air generally are not.

It matters for exactly one thing on a short itinerary: long-range mountain views. It matters almost not at all for the panda base, the monasteries, the teahouses or the food, which is most of why people come.

Booking implications by season

  • Peak (Golden Week, Spring Festival): book trains and timed entries as early as the systems allow. Assume sell-outs.
  • High (Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct): book the panda base on day one of the 14-day window; everything else can wait.
  • Low (Dec–Feb, excluding Spring Festival): the 14-day window is comfortable, and winter opening hours are shorter — check before planning an early start.
