Guilin and Yangshuo are treated as one destination on this site, because almost nobody visits one without the other: what people plan is a Guilin Yangshuo trip, and the decision that shapes it is which of the two you sleep in.
Guilin has the airport, the main rail stations and the cruise piers. Yangshuo, about 83 river kilometres downstream, has the karst scenery people came for and a far better base for cycling and the smaller rivers.
The Li River cruise runs one way, Guilin to Yangshuo, and takes most of a day. Planning around that single fact solves most of the itinerary.
How many days in Guilin and Yangshuo
The site’s four-day itinerary is built around that cruise. Day one is arrival in Guilin — enough time for Elephant Trunk Hill (twenty minutes) and the Two Rivers and Four Lakes waterway after dark. Day two is the cruise itself, Mopanshan pier to Longtoushan pier, landing you in Yangshuo by mid-afternoon. Day three is the Yulong River by bicycle, flat and easy, the day people remember most. Day four splits into two full-day options — Xingping and the view printed on the CNY 20 note, or the Longji rice terraces, two hours north — and you shouldn’t try both; they’re in opposite directions.
Getting to Guilin and Yangshuo
Guilin’s airport is KWL Liangjiang, with three rail hubs to keep straight: Guilin West, Guilin North, and Yangshuo’s own station. Guilin North handles onward travel — the Guilin to Guangzhou train runs from there every fifteen minutes or so, 2 h 30 to 3 h on a G-service for about CNY 200–250 second class (checked 14 Aug 2026); a D-service takes 4–5 hours for a similar fare, so check the ticket’s letter.
Getting to Yangshuo isn’t a train or a bus — it’s the Li River cruise, leaving Mopanshan pier, about forty minutes outside the city, around 09:20–09:30, and reaching Longtoushan pier four to five hours later. Bring your luggage; you’re not coming back to Guilin.
Guilin or Yangshuo as a base
The site’s own comparison keeps it simple: one night in Guilin, the rest in Yangshuo, for most trips. Guilin suits arrival and departure nights, dawn flights, and anyone wanting a full-service hotel — near Shanhu and Ronghu lakes for the lit-up waterway, or near Guilin North or West station before an early train. It wins with only 48 hours, or if you’re heading to Longji — north of the city, the wrong direction from Yangshuo. See is Guilin worth visiting for the fuller case.
Yangshuo is the base for pretty much everyone else — closer to the karst, better for cycling, and one of Asia’s established rock-climbing spots. West Street is loud and commercial, a bad place to actually sleep; two or three streets back is the sweet spot; the Yulong River countryside has the best setting but means a bike or scooter after dark. Its small guesthouses are also the most likely to be unregistered for foreign guests. See things to do in Yangshuo for what fills the days.
Best time to visit Guilin and Yangshuo
The best-time guide comes down to two opposite risks: too much water and the cruise gets suspended for flooding, worst in June; too little and the route shortens or moves downstream, worst in late winter and early spring. April to June is rated the best overall window, with September–October also strong once you’re past National Day Golden Week (1–7 October). Chasing the flooded rice terraces at Longji means late April into June; for the terraces gold and ready for harvest, aim for the second half of October instead.
What a Guilin Yangshuo trip costs
The cruise is the one big fixed cost: about CNY 215 for an adult on a 3-star boat, or CNY 360 on a 4-star, with lunch usually extra on the 3-star at CNY 30–50 (checked 13 Aug 2026). The Guilin–Guangzhou G-train runs about CNY 200–250 in second class, with the full published fare range across every class at CNY 164–317.50 (checked 14 Aug 2026). This region is cheap by Chinese scenic-area standards — cycling and walking just cost the bike hire, and both Guilin’s city sights and the Longji terraces charge only modest entry fees.
Guilin and Yangshuo travel FAQ
Is three days enough for Guilin and Yangshuo?
Tight, but doable — treat day one in Guilin as pure transit and pick a single day-four option, Xingping or Longji, not both.
Should I book the Li River cruise before I arrive?
Yes. Tickets are name-registered like train tickets, and sailings get cancelled in flood conditions, so don’t leave the cruise for your last day in the region.
Is a bamboo raft the same thing as the Li River cruise?
No. Bamboo rafts run short river sections around Yangshuo, about CNY 320 for a raft of two (checked August 2026); the cruise is the four-to-five-hour run from Guilin on a proper boat. Check which of the two a ticket is actually for.
Which train station do I need — Guilin North, Guilin West, or Yangshuo?
Guilin North is the main high-speed station and where the Guangzhou trains leave from. Yangshuo has its own station too, and some of those services call there directly, so check before assuming you must backtrack through Guilin.
