Guilin and Yangshuo are 83 river kilometres apart, and visitors routinely book the wrong one — usually Guilin, because that is where the flights land and the name on the map is bigger.

For most itineraries, Guilin is a transit point and Yangshuo is the destination. Here is when that holds and when it does not.

The default: one night in Guilin, the rest in Yangshuo

The Li River cruise runs one way and arrives at Yangshuo in the afternoon. That gives the trip its natural shape: sleep in Guilin the night before the boat, sleep in Yangshuo afterwards.

Anything else means backtracking two hours to get back to a hotel.

Guilin — what it is for

Suits: arrival and departure nights, dawn flights, short stopovers, families who want a full-service hotel.

Guilin is a proper city: an international airport, high-speed rail to Guangzhou and beyond, big hotels, hospitals, and karst peaks rising out of the middle of it. Elephant Trunk Hill, the Two Rivers and Four Lakes waterway lit at night, and Reed Flute Cave are all here.

What Guilin is not is the countryside on the postcards. That is downstream.

Where in Guilin

  • Around Shanhu and Ronghu lakes — central, walkable, the illuminated waterway on your doorstep.
  • Near Guilin North or Guilin West station — for an early train and nothing else.

Yangshuo — what it is for

Suits: essentially everyone else.

Yangshuo sits among the karst peaks rather than beside them. From the town you can cycle into the Yulong valley, walk to viewpoints, take a raft on the smaller river, or climb — this is one of the established rock-climbing destinations in Asia.

It is also considerably more pleasant to spend an evening in, provided you understand West Street.

Where in Yangshuo

  • West Street and the town centre — convenient, lively, and loud until late. Fine if you want dinner and bars on the doorstep; a poor choice for sleep.
  • Two or three streets back — the sweet spot. Everything is still walkable and the noise is not.
  • Yulong River countryside — guesthouses among the rice fields, five to fifteen minutes out by bike. The best setting here by a distance, and it commits you to a bicycle or a scooter.
  • Xingping — a small riverside village upstream, very quiet, closest to the CNY 20 note viewpoint. For a slow trip, not a first one.

Comparison

Evenings Quiet, urban Busy in the centre, silent in the countryside

When Guilin genuinely wins

  • You have 48 hours. With one full day, staying in Guilin and doing a short river trip beats spending half your time transferring.
  • You are heading to the Longji rice terraces. They are north of Guilin. Yangshuo is the wrong side.
  • You need a full-service hotel — reliable accessibility, a hospital nearby, international-brand standards.
  • Your flight is at dawn. The transfer from Yangshuo is not one to do at 04:00.

Practical points

Check the property accepts foreign passports. Small guesthouses, which is much of Yangshuo’s stock, are the most likely to be unregistered for foreign guests. Ask before you pay.

Countryside guesthouses need wheels. Charming at sunset, awkward at eleven at night in the rain. Confirm what transport the property provides.

Yangshuo has its own rail station. High-speed services stop there, which means you do not automatically have to return through Guilin to leave the region — check before you assume you do.
