Chengdu rewards a loose plan and punishes a tight one. Two things on this list are time-critical and everything else flexes around them.

The first is the panda base: it is reservation-only, sells nothing at the gate, and runs two fixed entry windows rather than one continuous day. The second is Leshan, which eats a full day once you add the train at each end.

Get those two booked and the rest of Chengdu is genuinely improvisable — which, given what the city is famous for, is the point.

Before you book anything

Three decisions determine whether this itinerary works.

  1. Reserve the panda base 14 days out. Reservations open two weeks ahead and the morning window goes first. There is no ticket office.
  2. Take the morning entry window, not the afternoon one. Pandas are fed in the morning and spend much of the afternoon asleep indoors.
  3. Decide whether Leshan is day two or day three. If your onward train leaves Chengdu in the evening, put Leshan on day two so day three ends near the station.

Day 1 — Pandas, then the old town

  1. 1

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The morning feed is the reason to be here at opening. The site is large, and arriving late means walking a long way to watch animals sleep. Allow two and a half to three and a half hours including the internal shuttle.

    Ticket
    CNY 55 per person
    Entry windows, Mar–Oct
    07:30–12:00 · 12:00–17:00
    Entry windows, Nov–Feb

  2. Metro line 3 south into the centre, then change for Wenshu Monastery on line 1
  3. 2

    Wenshu Monastery

A working Buddhist monastery rather than a restored monument, and the best free hour in central Chengdu. The teahouse culture the city is known for is more genuine in its courtyards than in the tourist lanes.

Checked 13 Aug 2026 Free admission and the 09:00–17:00 window are consistent across current visitor-information listings. A minority of sources give an 08:00 opening; if you are travelling specifically for the early hour, check the board at the gate.

  4. About 20 minutes on foot south, or one stop by taxi
  5. 3

    Kuanzhai Alley after dark

Three restored lanes, unapologetically commercial and heavily photographed. Worth an hour once the lanterns are lit and the tour groups have thinned. Treat it as an evening stroll and eat elsewhere.

Day 2 — Leshan and the Giant Buddha

Leshan is a full day, and the travelling is the easy part. The high-speed line makes the journey short; the queue for the cliff staircase is what actually decides how long you are there.

Fastest journey About 41 minutes
Typical range 41 – 100 minutes depending on the service
Frequency Around 72 trains a day
Second class, from About CNY 30

  1. 1

    Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area

The Nine Turns staircase runs down the cliff beside the Buddha’s full height. It is single-file and one-way, and that queue — not the size of the site — is the time cost. The river cruise sees the Buddha head-on in about half an hour with no queue at all, and is the only way to see the whole figure at once.

    Entrance ticket
CNY 80 · includes the Nine Turns staircase, Lingyun and Wuyou temples
    Boat tour
    About CNY 70, charged separately
    Hours, 1 Apr – 7 Oct
    07:30 – 18:30
    Hours, 8 Oct – 31 Mar
    08:00 – 17:30
    Time needed
    3 h – 4 h 30 with the staircase

Checked 13 Aug 2026 Ticket price, seasonal hours and staircase inclusion as published by current scenic-area ticketing listings.

Plan around this

The cliff staircase can close at short notice in heavy rain. If the forecast is wet, buy the river cruise instead — it runs in conditions that shut the walkway, and it is the better view of the Buddha anyway.

Day 3 — People’s Park, then out

  1. 1

People’s Park and its outdoor teahouse

The one piece of everyday Chengdu that has not been restored for visitors. Bamboo chairs under the trees, tea charged by the pot with hot water refilled indefinitely, ear-cleaners working the tables, and no reason at all to hurry. If you only understand one thing about this city, it should be this morning.

    Park entry

  2. Metro to Chengdu South or Chengdu East for onward high-speed trains
  3. 2

    Where this route goes next

Chengdu is the western hinge of the high-speed network. Chongqing is a comfortable half-day hop; Xi’an completes the classic western triangle in a little over three hours on the fastest service. If you have a fourth day, the 4-day Chengdu itinerary adds it without rushing the other three, and our guide to things to do in Chengdu covers what did not fit here.

What this itinerary costs in tickets

Entrance tickets only, per adult, at the prices checked above: about CNY 135 for the panda base and Leshan, plus roughly CNY 70 if you add the Leshan river cruise and about CNY 60 return for the Leshan train. Wenshu Monastery, People’s Park and Kuanzhai Alley are free.

That is the unusual thing about Chengdu, and the reason three days works: the two paid sights are cheap, and the best of the city costs nothing.

Common mistakes on a three-day Chengdu trip

  • Turning up at the panda base without a reservation. There is no ticket window. This is the single most common way to lose a morning here.
  • Taking the afternoon entry window. Cheaper on availability, much worse on pandas.
  • Trying to add Mount Emei to the same trip. Emei is a separate mountain and a separate day; squeezing it in with Leshan turns two good days into one rushed one.
  • Booking a late train out on day three. If the last thing you do is a teahouse, you want the station close, not a cross-city taxi in the evening.
What travellers report

Public traveller reports through 2026 consistently describe the panda base gate as the bottleneck on a Chengdu itinerary rather than the site itself, and describe the Leshan staircase queue as considerably longer than most visitors budget for.

Summarised from public traveller discussion, not from a visit. We have not travelled this route ourselves — see how we check.
