Chongqing’s day-trip options get flattened into identical listicles: Dazu Rock Carvings, Wulong karst, Furong Cave tacked on at the end as if it’s next door to the bridges. It isn’t. One of these trips works cleanly inside a single day. The other only half does, and selling it as a complete day trip wastes a traveler’s one shot at seeing it properly.
Both routes leave from Chongqing’s high-speed rail network — the same network that gets you to Chengdu from about 1 hour, covered in the Chengdu–Chongqing train guide. Below are the transfer times and ticket prices that actually hold up, and the one combination worth refusing.
Dazu Rock Carvings — the day trip that holds up
Dazu Rock Carvings is a UNESCO World Heritage site split across two locations roughly 15 minutes apart by local transport: Baodingshan, the larger and more famous carving complex, and Beishan, smaller and less crowded, with a night-viewing option most day-trippers never use. If you only have time for one, it’s Baodingshan.
| Site | Peak season (1 Mar–30 Nov) | Low season (1 Dec–end Feb) |
|---|---|---|
| Baodingshan | ¥115 | ¥110 |
| Beishan | ¥70 | ¥50 |
| Combo (both sites) | ¥170 | not listed separately |
Checked 28 Aug 2026 Ticket prices per trip.com. Baodingshan opens 08:30–18:00, last entry 16:10. Beishan opens 09:00–18:00, with a night-viewing slot 19:30–23:00 (admission cut off at 21:30).
| Method | Departs from | Journey time | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long-distance bus | Caiyuanba or Chenjiaping bus stations, every ~30 min | ~2h to Dazu District town | ¥45–50 |
| High-speed train | Chongqing West or Shapingba to Dazu South | 26–33 min | ¥40 second class, ¥64 first class |

The high-speed train gets you to Dazu District, not the carvings themselves. Budget another taxi ride (~30 min) or local bus route 205 (~50 min) from Dazu South Station to Baodingshan. Total realistic door-to-door transfer, one way, on public transport: roughly 1.5–2 hours.

At the site itself, figure two to three hours minimum for Baodingshan alone — the carvings reward slow looking, not a walk-through. Add Beishan and you’re using most of a day. A single day covering both sites plus round-trip transfer is tight but genuinely doable: multiple tour operators, including chinadiscovery.com and asiaodysseytravel.com, package it as a one-day trip from Chongqing, provided you leave early and don’t linger over lunch. This is a full day, out before 8am and back after dinner, not a casual half-day add-on. It does not require an overnight — the numbers support a same-day round trip cleanly. Our 4-day Chongqing itinerary gives Dazu a day of its own.
Wulong Karst and Furong Cave — one real day trip, one that isn’t
Wulong Karst is a broader UNESCO-listed geopark southeast of Chongqing, and the two attractions most visitors want — Three Natural Bridges (Tiankeng Sanqiao) and Furong Cave — sit inside it but are not next to each other. Treating them as one stop is where most trip plans go wrong.
Sources disagree on exactly how far Wulong is from central Chongqing: chinahighlights.com and chinadiscovery.com put the distance around 140 km, while shinyvisa.com cites closer to 190 km. Call it 140–190 km southeast of downtown — no source pins this down precisely, and none of them agree closely enough to average.
By road it’s 2.5–3 hours by car, 3.5 hours by coach. The high-speed train link changes the math: Chongqing East, North, or West stations to Wulong South Station runs as fast as 38 minutes on the quickest service, though the full range across all trains is 40 minutes to 2 hours depending on which one you catch. Wulong South Station itself sits about 15 km — roughly 45 minutes by car — from the Xiannvshan tourist center, so budget one more transfer leg on arrival.
Checked 28 Aug 2026 Road times per chinadiscovery.com; HSR times per christravelblog.com and trip.com; station-to-site transfer per general sourcing.
| Site | Ticket | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Three Natural Bridges | ~¥125 (includes mandatory shuttle) | daytime, shuttle-dependent |
| Furong Cave | ~¥150 | 08:30–16:30 |
Checked 28 Aug 2026 Three Natural Bridges price per trip.com, which separately lists a converted figure of roughly $23 that runs higher than the ¥125/~$17 figure found elsewhere — verify the current price before booking, the sources don’t agree. Furong Cave price and hours per general aggregated sourcing; the two sites sell tickets separately, and no combo ticket was found.
Three Natural Bridges alone, reached via the Wulong South high-speed link, is a genuine day trip from Chongqing. Fastest trains run 38 minutes each way, and several tour operators — chinadiscovery.com and asiaodysseytravel.com among them — sell exactly this as a one-day package, sometimes adding the nearby Longshuixia Gorge.
There’s no direct bus between the Three Natural Bridges area and Furong Cave. Local operators route this as two separate excursions, not one. If you’re traveling by public transport rather than a private tour, trying to fit both into a single day from Chongqing is the kind of plan that falls apart around 3pm with a train to catch and a cave you haven’t seen. See the bridges on day one. If Furong Cave matters to you, budget an overnight in Wulong and do it on day two.

Which one to pick
If you’re working with a tight Chongqing schedule and can only fit one day trip in, take Dazu Rock Carvings. It’s the stronger sight on its own terms — a UNESCO World Heritage site of carved cliffside reliefs, not a scenic gorge you can find variations of elsewhere in western China — and the transfer numbers support a comfortable single-day round trip covering both Baodingshan and Beishan.
If you have a spare day and want karst scenery specifically, Wulong’s Three Natural Bridges works as a standalone day trip via the high-speed train to Wulong South. Skip pairing it with Furong Cave unless you’re staying overnight in Wulong. And skip both trips entirely if your visit lands during National Day Golden Week (1–7 October) — see when to visit China for why that week breaks train ticket availability and site crowds nationwide, Chongqing included.
For the trains themselves — booking windows, station quirks, what to expect on a Chinese high-speed platform — see long-distance trains in China.
