The Shanghai to Beijing train is the busiest high-speed line in China, and for most visitors it is the easiest way between the two cities. The fastest bullet trains take 4 hours 24 minutes from Shanghai Hongqiao to Beijing South, there are around fifty direct trains a day, and you can buy a ticket with your passport two weeks ahead. The flight is shorter in the air and about the same door to door.
The line opened on 30 June 2011, runs 1,318 km, and its fastest trains have been allowed 350 km/h since September 2017. Below: which trains to pick, what they cost after the May 2026 fare change, the overnight option, and how booking works for foreigners.

How many trains, and which is fastest
Since the timetable change of 26 January 2026 there are 47 to 48 pairs of trains a day between the two cities, and the first departure from Hongqiao moved earlier, to 06:43. Counts of the direct G trains alone vary by source, from 44 to about 51. Either way, outside public holidays you will not struggle to find one.
On the timetable for 4 October 2026, the quickest from Shanghai was G12, leaving Hongqiao at 10:00 and reaching Beijing South at 14:24. G8 and G10 took 4 hours 26. These are the trains that stop only at the biggest stations; the stopping ones take longer, up to 5 hours 47 for G532 (06:31–12:18). In the other direction, G25 does Beijing to Shanghai in 4 hours 18. Which train numbers are fastest can change with the timetable, so sort by journey time when you book rather than trusting a train number from a guide, this one included.
Almost every G train runs from Shanghai Hongqiao, which is on Metro Lines 2, 10 and 17 and joined to Terminal 2 of Hongqiao Airport. A handful use Shanghai Railway Station instead. Check which station is printed on your booking.

What a ticket costs
Fares on this line float. Since December 2020 each train and date has its own price under a published ceiling, and on 26 May 2026 the operator raised that ceiling by 20%, taking the top second-class fare to about ¥800. So far, what passengers actually pay has stayed well below it. On the 4 October listing, second class on the fastest trains cost ¥661, first class ¥1,058 and business class ¥2,315; across all the day’s G trains, second class ranged from ¥525 to ¥678. The same train can also be cheaper on a quieter day: G44 cost ¥661 for 18 September and ¥626 for 24 September.
- Second class
- ¥525–678 · 2+3 seats
- First class
- about ¥1,058 · 2+2 seats
- Business class
- about ¥2,315 · 1+2 seats, meal included
Second class is perfectly comfortable for four and a half hours. If you want a window, ask for seat A or F; C and D are the aisle, and B is the middle seat on the three-seat side.

The overnight sleeper
A few D trains run overnight, so you can sleep through the trip and save a hotel night. On the 4 October listing, D8 left at 19:08 and reached Beijing Fengtai at 06:58, D6 ran 21:15–09:25 and D10 21:05–09:24, each about 12 hours, with fares from ¥338 to ¥740 depending on the berth. Soft sleeper means a lockable four-berth compartment; hard sleeper is six berths, open to the corridor. Note that some of these trains arrive at Fengtai rather than Beijing South, so plan the last leg to your hotel.
Is it worth it? Only if the hotel saving matters or you like trains. The daytime G train is so quick that an overnight trip mostly trades a comfortable afternoon for a short night.

Booking with a foreign passport
Tickets go on sale 15 days ahead, counting the day of travel, released in batches between 08:00 and 18:00. You can book on the official 12306 site or app, which takes Visa, Mastercard and JCB, after registering with your passport; verification can take up to 48 hours, so do it before you need a ticket. Trip.com and other agents also sell tickets, for a fee.
There is no paper ticket. Your passport is the ticket, and you show it at the station entrance and the gate. Sources differ on whether foreign passports work at the automatic gates or need the staffed lane, so allow time: 30 to 40 minutes before departure is usually enough, and an hour or more on holidays. The luggage allowance is 20 kg per adult.
Checked 3 Oct 2026 Booking window from Trip.com (14 Sep 2026); 12306 registration from realchinatrip.com (Apr 2026) and seat61.com; station procedure from seat61.com and wanderinchina.com (Jul 2026), which disagree on gates and timing.
Train or plane?
Beijing Capital to Shanghai Hongqiao is China’s busiest domestic air route, with about 7.45 million seats in 2025, and there are more than fifty flights each way a day. The flight takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, and on 4 October the cheapest one-way fare was US$69, with an average closer to US$117. Once you add the trip to the airport, security and the wait, one estimate puts the plane at 5.5 to 6.5 hours door to door against 5.5 to 6 for the train.
We would take the train. It costs about the same, leaves from inside the city, and does not depend on air traffic. Fly if you are connecting to an international flight or if you find a fare well below the train.
Checked 3 Oct 2026 Route ranking from Wikipedia’s list of busiest flight routes; flight time and fares from Trip.com (3 Oct 2026); door-to-door estimate from wanderinchina.com (Jun 2026). The recommendation is ours.
When not to travel
National Day Golden Week runs from 1 to 7 October 2026, and if you are reading this during it, trains for the next few days will be full. The other crunch is the Spring Festival travel rush around Chinese New Year, which falls on 6 February 2027. Typhoons can stop trains too: on 9–10 August 2026 Typhoon Dolphin halted services across Shanghai and Zhejiang. Outside those dates, two or three days’ notice is usually plenty.
