China Snow Town, or Xuexiang (雪乡), is a forest-farm village in the mountains of southeast Heilongjiang whose wooden houses vanish each winter under thick, rounded caps of snow. At dusk the red lanterns come on and the whole street glows. That’s the photograph, and it’s real. What the photograph leaves out is the crowd: 1.45 million visitors came in the 2024-25 winter, to a village that is mostly one main street. Snow Town is about 280 km from Harbin, too far for a day trip, and it rewards the people who stay a night and get up early. This guide covers the buses and trains, the tickets, where to sleep and what it all costs.
Where China Snow Town is
The village is the Shuangfeng Forest Farm (双峰林场) of the Dahailin Forestry Bureau, in Hailin, part of Mudanjiang. It sits where two ranges meet, the Zhangguangcai and the Laoye mountains, and the snow comes early and stays. In 2025 the first real snowfall came on 17 October, six days earlier than the year before. The snow season can last seven months, and in places it lies 2 m deep. Expect -30°C to -5°C in winter.
You’ll see the place called Snow Town, Snow Village, Xuexiang and China Snow Town. They’re all the same village, 中国雪乡 in Chinese. Distances from Harbin vary a little by source, from 260 km to 283 km; 280 km is the common figure.

Getting from Harbin to China Snow Town
There are two practical ways to go on your own, plus the tour route most Chinese visitors take.
Direct bus from Central Street
Buses leave from the tourism distribution centre on Central Street (Zhongyang Street) in the morning, at 07:00, 08:00 and 09:00 in China Discovery’s listing. The ride takes five to six hours and costs ¥120-150. It’s the simplest option and the slowest. You arrive in the early afternoon with a few hours of daylight left.
High-speed train to Yabuli West, then bus
This is faster. A high-speed train from Harbin reaches Yabuli West (亚布力西) in 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 20, for ¥76-87 in second class. From the station, a bus runs to Snow Town in about two hours for ¥85; China Bus Guide lists departures at 09:00, 10:00, 10:30, 12:00, 13:30 and 15:30. Door to door, that’s three and a half to four hours, plus any wait for the bus. It’s also the route to take if you want to ski a session at Yabuli on the way; the Yabuli ski resort guide has the details.
From Yanji or Changbaishan
Coming from the Changbai Mountains side, a direct bus runs from Yanji between 26 November and 30 March, leaving at 08:30 and 12:00, for ¥150 one way or ¥260 return.
On a tour
Most visitors come on a two- or three-day tour from Harbin. Heilongjiang’s tourism department publishes benchmark “honest prices” for these each season, which makes a useful yardstick against whatever you’re quoted. For 2025-26, a two-day Snow Town tour was ¥850 per person at the standard level and ¥1,350 at the premium level. A three-day Harbin-Yabuli-Snow Town loop was ¥1,180 or ¥1,980. The standard three-day price covered the coach, meals, a night in a shared homestay room in Snow Town, a night in a twin room at Yabuli, the Snow Town entrance ticket and a three-hour beginner ski session. Expect 30-50% more in mid-December, over New Year and at Spring Festival.
| Option | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Direct bus from Central Street | 5-6 hours | ¥120-150 |
| Train to Yabuli West + bus | 3.5-4 hours | ¥76-87 + ¥85 |
| Bus from Yanji (26 Nov-30 Mar) | Not confirmed | ¥150 one way |
| Two-day tour, standard | 2 days, 1 night | ¥850 benchmark |
| Three-day tour with Yabuli, standard | 3 days, 2 nights | ¥1,180 benchmark |

China Snow Town tickets and extras
The entrance ticket is ¥140 per person in the winter season (1 November to 30 April), or ¥155 with the sightseeing bus inside the scenic area. In summer it drops to ¥70. Most of what people come for, the snow roofs and the lantern street, is covered by that ticket. The extras add up fast.
| Item | Price | Notes |

| Entrance, winter season | ¥140 | ¥155 with sightseeing bus |

What to do in China Snow Town
Snow Town is small. Xueyun Street (雪韵大街), the main street, is the lantern-lit strip in every photo, and you can walk it end to end in minutes. Go at dusk, when the lights come on, and again early the next morning before the tour coaches arrive.
Dream Home (梦幻家园) is the scenic spot China Discovery rates as the best in the village: a cluster of snow-buried houses and trees with evening shows. Yangcao Hill (羊草山), at 1,250 m the highest point nearby, is where people go for sunrise over the forest. You reach it by off-road vehicle or snowmobile, and it’s worth the early start if the sky is clear.
The one real adventure is the Snow Valley crossing (雪谷穿越). The trail starts at Snow Valley (雪谷), on the Dongsheng Forest Farm in Wuchang, climbs over Yangcao Hill and comes down into Snow Town. China Discovery gives it four to eight hours, depending on snow and fitness. The Trip.com listing gives the season as 1 January to 31 March, 07:00-17:00, and is blunt about the risk: stay on the main trail and don’t go into the mountains alone. Snow Valley itself is far less commercial than Snow Town, and some travellers stay there instead.

Where to sleep in China Snow Town
This is where the budget goes. Rooms on or near Xueyun Street ran ¥800-2,000 a night in China Discovery’s survey. The Dabeicha area, a 15-minute walk away, is quieter and cheaper at ¥300-800. Much of the stock is family-run guesthouses rather than hotels, and the standard tours put guests in shared homestay rooms. Book well ahead for Christmas, New Year and Spring Festival, when the village fills and prices peak.
Stay at least one night. The lanterns are the point of the place, and the only way to see the street without coaches is at night or first thing in the morning. One night is also enough for most people.

When to go
The 2025-26 season opened on 17 November 2025 and closed on 4 March 2026. The 2026-27 dates hadn’t been announced when we checked; expect the opening in mid- to late November, weather permitting. For the deepest snow, go between late December and early March. Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year (6 February in 2027) are the most crowded and most expensive weeks, so the window just after New Year and before the Spring Festival build-up is the one to aim for.
That same window works for Harbin itself. Ice and Snow World opened on 21 December in 2024 and 17 December in 2025; the Harbin Ice Festival guide will carry the 2026-27 dates once they’re out. For clothing at -30°C, see the Harbin in winter guide.
Checked 29 Sep 2026 2025-26 opening from Xinhua (17 Nov 2025); closing date from icefestivalharbin.com; best months from Tibetcn and China Discovery; 2027 Chinese New Year date from the Chinese calendar.
Is China Snow Town worth it?
Yes, if you go in with the right expectations. The snow roofs look exactly like the pictures, and the lantern street at night is one of the prettiest winter scenes in China. But it’s a stage set at peak times: one street, thousands of visitors and prices that follow demand. A rushed tour that arrives at 15:00 and leaves after breakfast gets the worst of it. A night in Dabeicha, a sunrise on Yangcao Hill and an early walk down Xueyun Street get the best. If crowds put you off entirely, Snow Valley or the Snow Valley hike is the quieter way to see the same forest.
China Snow Town: quick answers
Can you visit China Snow Town as a day trip from Harbin?
Not realistically. Even the train-and-bus route takes three and a half to four hours each way, and the direct bus five to six. Plan one night.
Is Snow Town the same as Snow Village or Xuexiang?
Yes. Snow Town, Snow Village, Harbin Snow Village and Xuexiang all mean the same place: 中国雪乡, on the Shuangfeng Forest Farm in Hailin.
Can you combine Snow Town with Yabuli?
Easily. Yabuli West station is on the way, and the benchmark three-day tour does exactly that. On your own, ski a morning session at Yabuli and take the afternoon bus on to Snow Town.
For the rest of the trip, the three-day Harbin itinerary covers the city before or after, and everything else is on the Harbin hub.
