Yabuli ski resort is where Harbin sends skiers once they’ve had their fill of ice sculptures. It’s one of China’s oldest ski areas and still its best known: 56 runs over three peaks in the hills of Shangzhi, southeast of the city. How far exactly depends on who you ask. Wikipedia puts it at 177 km, the Sun Mountain resort says 198. A fast train covers most of it in just over an hour. The catch is that “Yabuli” isn’t one resort with one lift pass. It’s a ski zone shared by several operators, and knowing which one you’re paying at saves a lot of confusion at the ticket window.

How the Yabuli ski resort is laid out

The official name is 亚布力滑雪旅游度假区, the Yabuli Ski Tourism Resort, a 4A-rated zone at 84 Jinpai Avenue in Shangzhi. Shangzhi is a county-level city that falls under Harbin, which is why listings put Yabuli “in Harbin” even though it’s a long way out. Getting into the zone costs nothing. You pay for skiing at whichever area you pick.

The runs sit on three peaks: Da Guokui (大锅盔), Er Guokui (二锅盔) and San Guokui (三锅盔), the big, second and third “guokui”. Da Guokui is the tall one, with the long, steep runs, one of them 4,700 m, on slopes of 32° and more. Er Guokui has a 45° pitch known locally as the “waterfall”. San Guokui is the gentle end, where most beginners and intermediates spend their day. The peaks top out at about 1,374 m and the base sits near 397 m. At the opening of the 2025-26 season the resort counted 56 runs in all, with a maximum vertical drop of 912 m.

Yabuli has form as a competition venue. It hosted events at the 1996 Asian Winter Games, the 2009 Winter Universiade and, again, the 2025 Asian Winter Games.

Which part of Yabuli to ski

Sun Mountain (阳光度假村)

The old Windmill Villa, and the main commercial resort. Its runs are on San Guokui, 17 of them adding up to about 31 km, and it holds China’s top 5S ski rating. Club Med opened its first village in China here in December 2010. That matters for foreign visitors: Club Med advertises English-speaking instructors, and its all-inclusive packages, which China Highlights says usually start at about US$220 per person, take the guesswork out of rentals and lessons.

New Sports Committee ski area (新体委滑雪场)

Built in 2007 for the 2009 Universiade and used to train China’s national team. It has international-standard courses, a mogul run and a terrain park, and it’s the cheaper choice. In the 2024-25 season it opened from 24 November to 31 March, 08:00-16:30.

New Yabuli, or Sunshine B area (新亚布力 / 阳光B区)

A beginner-to-intermediate area with four runs and room for about 5,000 skiers at once. If you’ve never skied, this or San Guokui is where you’ll start.

Getting from Harbin to Yabuli

Take the train. High-speed services on the Harbin-Mudanjiang line run from Harbin, Harbin West and Harbin East stations to Yabuli West (亚布力西). The fastest take about 1 hour 5 minutes, most around 1 hour 15, and a second-class seat costs ¥76-87. Trip.com listed 27 direct trains a day between the two, slow trains included; those cost ¥32.50-37.50 and can take four hours, so check the train number before you book. Tickets go on sale 15 days ahead on 12306 and Trip.com.

Yabuli West is not at the slopes. Budget 20-25 minutes for the last stretch: a Harbin travel agency puts the taxi at about ¥60, or ¥5 and about 30 minutes on the local bus. China Highlights notes that Yabuli South station is closest, about five minutes’ drive, but most trains stop at Yabuli West.

Long-distance buses from Harbin’s Daowai and Nangang bus stations reach Yabuli town in about three and a half hours, and you still need a minibus or taxi to the lifts. A private car takes around three hours; China Highlights quotes transfers from US$300 for a five-seat vehicle.

Yabuli lift tickets and rental prices

Yabuli doesn’t sell tickets the way Alpine resorts do. The common product is a timed session, usually three hours, bundled with skis, boots and often clothing. Prices climb at weekends and holidays. China Highlights gives ¥150-300 for a two-hour ticket as a rough range. The packages below were the ones listed on Chinese ticket sites, and they’re the most concrete numbers we could find.

Yabuli ski packages as listed (per person)
Area Package Price
New Sports Committee 3 hours, beginner slope, skis, suit, goggles, helmet ¥117
New Sports Committee 3 hours, intermediate slope, same kit ¥120
New Sports Committee Intermediate session plus forest hot spring ¥308
New Yabuli / Sunshine B 3 hours with skis From ¥169
New Yabuli / Sunshine B 3 hours, beginner, with suit, goggles, helmet ¥178
Club Med Yabuli All-inclusive stay From about US$220

We couldn’t find a published Sun Mountain day rate for 2025-26 that we’d stand behind, so there isn’t one here. Check the resort’s own booking page or Trip.com close to your dates.

When the Yabuli ski season runs

The season starts in November and ends in late March. For 2025-26 the resort opened on 7 November, a week or so earlier than the mid-November date most guides give. Snow conditions usually peak in December and January. The crowds come with the school winter break and Chinese New Year, which falls on 6 February in 2027, and with weekends in general. A weekday in December or early March is the quiet option.

If you’re in Harbin for the ice, the timing lines up well. Ice and Snow World opened on 21 December in 2024 and 17 December in 2025, so a late-December or January trip can cover both. The Harbin Ice Festival guide tracks the 2026-27 dates, which hadn’t been announced when we checked.

Checked 29 Sep 2026 2025-26 opening date from the People’s Daily app, 8 Nov 2025; season range from China Highlights; peak snow months from Snow-Online; 2027 Chinese New Year date from the Chinese calendar.

Who Yabuli suits, and who it doesn’t

Yabuli is big by Chinese standards and modest by Alpine or Japanese ones. The skiers who come away happy are beginners and lower intermediates. Experienced skiers used to Hokkaido powder tend to report packed, largely man-made snow. On Tripadvisor it averages 3.6 out of 5 across 75 reviews, and one complaint keeps coming back: rental gear is tired, so bring your own boots at least if you can. The other is the obvious one. Yabuli is far from everything else, and you plan around the train.

For a first try at skiing, though, it works. The runs are groomed and a three-hour session with gear included starts at ¥117. Wrap up properly: the Harbin in winter guide covers the layers you’ll need at minus twenty.

Yabuli as a day trip, or stay the night?

A day trip works. Take an early train, be on the snow by mid-morning, ski a three-hour session and be back in Harbin for dinner. Day sessions end at 16:30 and, in early January, the sun sets around 16:00, so there’s no point racing for a late start. It also works as a fourth day on the three-day Harbin itinerary.

Staying overnight gives you two sessions and a quieter morning on the slopes. Farm-style guesthouses around Yabuli start at about ¥100 a room and basic three-star-type hotels at about ¥140, according to a Harbin agency guide from April 2025; Club Med is the comfortable end. Many tours out of Harbin pair Yabuli with China Snow Town (Xuexiang, 雪乡), two hours further on by bus, on a two- or three-day loop. If you’d rather not organise it yourself, Heilongjiang’s tourism department set benchmark prices for 2025-26 of ¥298 per person for a standard one-day Yabuli tour from Harbin and ¥698 for the premium version, with 30-50% added in peak weeks.
