Almost every problem people have in Zhangjiajie comes from one misunderstanding: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain are not the same place, not the same ticket, and not even in the same direction.

The Forest Park, inside the wider Wulingyuan scenic area, is where the sandstone pillars are — the landscape that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. It is about forty kilometres out of town and its ticket runs for four consecutive days.

Tianmen Mountain is on the edge of Zhangjiajie city itself, with its own ticket, its own cable car and the glass skywalk.

This itinerary gives the Forest Park two days and Tianmen one, which is the split that works.

The tickets, before anything else

Zhangjiajie main tickets
Ticket Price Includes Validity
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park CNY 240 adult Park entry and unlimited in-park eco-buses 4 consecutive days from first scan
Bailong Elevator CNY 65 one way · 130 return The glass lift up to Yuanjiajie Charged separately
Tianmen Mountain, one-day pass CNY 288 adult Cable car both ways, shuttle buses, admission One day
Grand Canyon + Glass Bridge CNY 50 + 125, plus CNY 3 insurance Canyon entry and the glass bridge One day

Checked 14 Aug 2026 — corrected Now from the official 2026 fee schedule published by Zhangjiajie Tourism. We first published these as ranges because aggregator sites disagreed; the official table gives a single figure for each. Three of our numbers moved: the park is 240 rather than 236–240, the elevator 65 rather than 65–72, and Tianmen 288 rather than 278–288. A CNY 3 insurance fee is added at the gate. Full breakdown on the tickets page.

Concessions are substantial

Children under 14 enter the Forest Park free. Ages 14–17 and seniors 60–64 pay a reduced rate; over-65s enter free and pay only the shuttle and insurance. Bring passports — age is verified at the gate.

Day 1 — Into the Forest Park: Golden Whip Stream and Yuanjiajie

  1. 1

    Golden Whip Stream

A flat valley walk along a stream, between the pillars rather than above them. It is the gentlest introduction to the scale of the place and the only major section that involves no cable car, no lift and no queue. Macaques along the path are habituated and will take food from bags.

    Effort
    Flat, easy walking
    Time needed
    2 – 3 h at a normal pace
    Included in
    The main park ticket
  2. Bailong Elevator — about 2 minutes, against roughly 2 hours on foot
  3. 2

Yuanjiajie and the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain

The viewpoint everyone comes for, reached most easily by the Bailong Elevator — three glass lifts built into the cliff face, and the fastest way from the valley floor to the plateau. The pillar renamed after the film is here, along with the natural bridge.

    Elevator
CNY 65 one way, charged separately
    On foot instead
    About 2 hours of climbing
    Time on the plateau
    2 – 3 h

Checked 13 Aug 2026 CNY 65 one way per the official 2026 fee schedule, which also lists CNY 130 return; we previously published 65–72 on aggregator figures. The two-minute ascent against roughly two hours on foot is consistent across every source.

Day 2 — Tianzi Mountain, and the canyon if you have the legs

Your park ticket is still valid — it runs four consecutive days from the first scan, which is exactly why the Forest Park gets two days in this plan and not one.

  1. 1

    Tianzi Mountain

The northern plateau, reached by its own cable car or by bus from within the park. Broader, further-reaching views than Yuanjiajie and generally fewer people, particularly early. Sea-of-cloud conditions after rain are the reason photographers stay several days.

    Included in
The main park ticket; cable car extra
    Time needed
    Half a day
    Best conditions
Early morning, or the clearing after rain
  2. 2

Optional: Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and the Glass Bridge

A separate scenic area with a separate ticket, outside the Forest Park. The bridge spans the canyon at height and is the single most photographed structure in the region. Note the two-part pricing: canyon entry and bridge access are charged separately.

    Canyon entry
CNY 60, or CNY 50 as part of the combined ticket
    Glass bridge
    CNY 125
    Insurance
    Added at the gate

Checked 13 Aug 2026 Per current Zhangjiajie scenic-area ticketing listings. Bridge access is capped daily and books out in peak season.

Day 3 — Tianmen Mountain

  1. 1

    Tianmen Mountain and Heaven’s Gate

A different mountain and a different day. The cable car from Zhangjiajie city is among the longest in the world and climbs directly from the urban edge to the summit ridge. On the mountain: the glass skywalk pinned to the cliff, the 99-bend road, and the 999 steps up to the natural arch known as Heaven’s Gate.

    One-day pass
    CNY 288 adult
    Includes
Cable car both ways, shuttle buses, admission
    Concessions
Reduced for students, 14–17 and 60–64; lower again over 65
    Time needed
    Most of a day

Checked 13 Aug 2026 CNY 288 for the one-day pass per the official 2026 fee schedule, which confirms the increase reported for November 2025. The mini cableway (CNY 25 one way) and the cliff escalators (CNY 32) are extra. Routes are lettered and determine whether you ascend by cable car or by road — check which one you are buying.

What three days here costs in tickets

Per adult, at the prices above: CNY 593 for the Forest Park, the Bailong Elevator one way and the Tianmen day pass. Add about CNY 178 if you include the Grand Canyon and glass bridge.

That makes Zhangjiajie one of the more expensive destinations in China for entry fees — several times a typical Chengdu day. It is worth knowing before you arrive rather than at the gate.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Booking one night. The park ticket runs four days for a reason. One day inside it is a long queue and a rushed viewpoint.
  • Assuming Tianmen is in the park. Different mountain, different ticket, different side of the city.
  • Arriving without a passport for everyone. Concessions are age-verified and tickets are name-registered.
  • Planning the glass bridge on a fixed day in peak season. It is capacity-capped.
